Atlantic Beach, North Carolina: The fishing has been red hot off the North Carolina coast even though few anglers have ventured out to sea because of the recent hurricanes. Captain Bruce Pollock of the Sea Hawk reported 2 -3 blue and white marlin a day over the past week with numerous wahoo and dolphinfish sprinkled in between.
Kona, Hawaii: Blue marlin fishing has been somewhat sporadic since the first of the month according to Captain Jody Bright. An occasional yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and mahi mahi spruce up the action particularly around the FAD’s down south.
Madeira, Portugal: Captain Kevin Nakamaru of the Pesca Grossa reported by e-mail seeing the fish of a lifetime on September third. He estimated the blue marlin to be 1500 pounds. She “eye-balled” each of the baits in the spread before grabbing the short rigger. Unfortunately they pulled hook on her after a few minutes. Three days later they popped-off a 1200 pounder. Every day since September first a large fish has been seen although none caught. And the bigeye tuna remain present in abundance. Their charter caught a 326 pounder last week.
Midway Island, South Pacific: Captain Jody Bright has recently returned from Midway where he had been helping Captain Roddy Hayes explore the long quiet offshore waters. They averaged a Pacific blue marlin every other day with most being over 300 to 400 pounds. The largest caught was estimated as 800 plus. Closer to shore the giant trevally were exceptionally thick and at 60 to 130 pounds were heavy as well. Although the productivity of this area is still not well delineated, the two captains remained excited about its potential.
