IGFA North Annex

 August 1, 2009

Since getting involved with big game angling 25 years ago like so many anglers before me I have gradually become more and more addicted! I also have been very fortunate having had the opportunity to fish most areas of the world and have been tremendously successful at accomplishing virtually all of my angling goals. I have completed two billfish royal slams, one tuna royal slam, and am quite near to completing an additional royal slam of each. I have caught 45 fish, mostly marlin, weighing in excess of 500 pounds and six fish between 900 and 1200 pounds. And I have been the World Billfish Series champion three times (1992, 1993, and 1996).

I have accumulated many angling related souvenirs during my travels in addition to more than 40 works of marine art from lithographs to oil paintings to sculptures and have 29 large fish mounts on the walls of my house, garage, and office; all tuna and billfish species. After looking around at all of these items my good friend Ian McTurk had a granite marker made for me as a birthday present several years ago which below a picture of a marlin simply states “IGFA North Annex.” This would seem to be an appropriate description of my property despite its land-locked position in South Georgia.

Having developed metastatic kidney cancer three years ago my fishing memories and memorabilia have assumed a progressively more important role in my life particularly after two cerebral bleeds and a mid-thoracic spinal cord compression have left me partially paralyzed and in a wheelchair. And this was further complicated by the recent unexpected passing of my fiery wife Teresa. Currently on my present oral chemotherapy regimen I have had some tumor resolution and my strength and appetite have stabilized to a point that I believe I can continue to pursue my angling dreams even if from a wheelchair.
