Kailua, Kona, Hawaii was the site of the tenth annual Big Island Invitational Marlin Tournament June nineteenth through the twenty third. Our team won the event last year and we came prepared to go “back to back,” a feat which had not heretofore been accomplished. Fishing with Capt. Freddy Rice, who we brought out of retirement for this event, aboard the Sea Baby III we hooked and boated a 552 pound Pacific blue marlin on the first day of the tournament. That fish was taken within ten minutes of the time and within two miles of the spot where our team captain Bobby Unvert caught the 424 pounder to win last year’s tournament. I had the pleasure of being in the chair this year. And just like 1995 our fish held up through the entire tournament to again give us the victory.
Thirty-seven teams from Australia, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand, Guam, Indonesia, Argentina, and the U.S. competed in the tournament. The more than $98,000 in prize money made the BIIMT once again Hawaii’s richest marlin fishing event. Twenty-eight fish were caught during the three day affair. Only seven of these were weighed, the remainder being tagged and released. We took home over $50,000 for our first place finish. Darrel Honer aboard the Kona Rainbow took second place with a 541 pound blue also caught the first day and third place went to John Evans on the Sea Genie II for a 458 pounder. The anglers on the Alibi won the $5000 for the most tagged fish.
